Virtue Is Bold, And Goodness Never Fearful
2022
glass, resin, silicone, plastic toy, vintage wool carpet, 23,5 krt gold leaf
flamework, casting, mixed media
36 x 16 x 30 cm
Virtue Is Bold, And Goodness Never Fearful is a piece about empowerment. For women, girls and everyone else who is affected by the fast changing world where our personal rights are in jeopardy.
It was a childhood memory that gave the feeling of empowerment shape - a memory of when I myself was a 6 or 7 year old little lamb. I was a big dinosaur fan at that age and my parents took me to an exhibition to see the dinosaur fossils on display. I remember standing face to face with a Tyranosaurus Rex skull, which once belonged to a female animal. I was in total awe of this beast, of its shear power, showing her teeth, and that it was a girl like myself.
When you look into the mouth you will discover the lamb does not have a lambs head inside the mask - it has a golden face of young girl.

Eating Or Heating
2022
flamework, mixed media
glass. glass fiber, resin, silicone, fabric
38x26x33cm
Eating or Heating, a reality many people will have to face this coming winter with energy bills going through the roof. This piece, a glass shopping basket carrying icey blue mittens, was inspired by a news article from the BBC about the elderly and people with low income having to choose between a warm meal or a warm house. The phrase eating or heating stuck to me which inspired this piece.

Big Bunny Is Watching You/ Reality Just Crept Into My Studio
2022
glass casting, coldwork
uranium glass, wax
approx. 13 x 15 x 22 cm each
Big Bunny Is Watching You / Reality Just Crept Into My Studio. George Orwell's 1984 meets Richard Adams Watership Down meets 2022. In these stories the main characters have to deal with dystopian worlds. One we ourselves seem to live in more and more ourselves.
The reality of the influence caused by current events in the EU, crept into my studio while making this piece. I could not get the glass from the suppliers I needed to cast all the wax models into glass. Delivery time was extended to over a month and more, instead of a couple of days. Which meant the piece could not be finished in time. You might wonder why I didn’t buy another brand of clear glass - well… it is not just clear glass.
After several weeks of deliberating with myself and questioning what to do, I decided to incorporated a wax model into the piece.
There was nothing I could do about it but accepting and learning how to deal with this reality that crept into in the studio and try to adapt to the side effects of the current state our societies and world are in.
